[EXPO] 'Portraits in the Gallery' @ Kunstennacht
May 2018 — Curator in His Own Home: Portraits in the Gallery
Herman Maes is an avid art collector. In his home, he places diverse art forms side by side — from historical avant-garde to contemporary works — creating a constantly evolving domestic gallery.
His collection traces back to his ancestors: writer Herman Teirlinck (great-grandfather) and avant-garde artist Karel Maes (grandfather). For Herman Maes, this heritage is an inexhaustible source of visual knowledge.
During Hasselt Art Night, Maes opens his home to the public. For this edition, he assembles a broad spectrum of portraiture from his own and others’ collections — spanning photographs, paintings, sculptures, and installations. His aim is to offer visitors a fresh way to experience art, beyond the museum, within the intimacy of a home.
